Difference between Free Antivirus & Paid Antivirus

A lot of people are using the internet on a daily basis to connect with family and friends, transact business online and shop. With all the information received by your computer, it is vital that you know it is safe against viruses and other threats that can get your information. The use of antivirus software is a key component when it comes to keeping the data on your computer safe and not acquiring computer viruses or falling as victims into identity theft while surfing the net.

There are free and paid antivirus programs. The only difference is most commercial antivirus programs come with extra feature that provides added protection.

One of the huge differences between free and paid antivirus is the support level provided to the users. Companies producing paid antivirus programs can give you a good deal of money from it. This is because they hire people working in call centers that you can call to assist you when you have problems with the software you are using. There are also knowledgeable technicians that can answer your email.

Free antivirus on the other hand has limited support usually tutorials, web forums and knowledge bases. Free support does not offer personal, one-on-one contact with technicians via phone or email. Due to this different in the support level, most people choose to purchase commercial antivirus program for peace of mind.

Another huge difference between free antivirus and paid antivirus programs is the feature that comes with the program. Advanced features are removed in free antivirus programs. This provides antivirus companies a sales pitch to attract users to upgrade their paid versions for added security. This is what most people call as the Nag Factor with antivirus programs that are free as users are bombarded with banner ads, pop-ups and other advertising forcing them to upgrade their free to paid service.

Despite the difference of free and paid antivirus in Support and Features, there are some instances in which free antivirus programs can be sufficient. If your computer does not have internet access or you use only for playing games and some applications, free antivirus can be sufficient because there is a lack of possibility of constant threats that come in via internet connection. But for users with sensitive information to protection on their computers or those who require added layer of protection and peace if mind, paid antivirus software would be a much better alternative.
